Selecting the Perfect Location for Your Session

If I've learned anything during my time as a photographer it's that good lighting is the key to making my couples look AH-MAZING and, unfortunately, not all locations are created equal when it comes to lighting. Because of this, I have become very selective with portrait locations and find it's best to avoid areas that are very dense with trees. The shadows created by these trees can create unflattering shadows on faces as well as skin tones that have a muddy or green appearance to them. Below you'll find some of my favourite locations that I have found to have the best lighting that will allow you to look your best during your engagement session!

More Favourite Locations:

The cascades

Seaman Park

Norwester hotel

wild goose beach

locations special to you!

I always love finding New & unique locations for my couples!

01

There is no such thing as too dressed up when it comes to your session!

02

Dresses and skirts tend to look most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body

03

A lot of my couples will bring two outfits. One more formal and the other more casual to get the best of both worlds! However, if choosing one outfit is stressful enough, choose just ONE outfit that you really LOVE!

04

When choosing colours for your outfits, I recommend selecting outfits that are solid in colour or have patterns that aren't too small or busy such as small stripes and plaid as they can appear distorted in images. The camera loves shades of soft pinks and muted blues mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white.

05

As you’re coordinating your outfit with your finance’s, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the colour palettes coordinate, but don’t necessarily "match". You should each aim to wear a different dominant colour, but stay within a similar colour palette family.

06

In my experience, every woman, regardless of her shape, has an area of her body that she’s self-conscious about, so recognizing what that is in advance is key. Choosing flattering silhouettes and colours that compliment your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your photos. If you feel comfortable when you leave your house, you'll feel confident in your pictures!

07

Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Belts, hats, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention. Fresh florals in a bouquet can be a really romantic touch as well.

08

Professional hair and makeup is on the top of most of my brides’ checklists because it looks amazing and removes the stress of getting ready on your own. Whether it’s lash extensions or blown-out hair, professional hair and makeup will give you an extra boost of confidence in front of the camera, and it always photographs like a dream. I've attached a list of some of my favourite HMUAs in the Recommendations section.

09

Don’t forget, your ring will be center stage, so give yourself permission to get it cleaned and your nails done, too!

10

Most men aren’t overly excited to take photos for two hours, because they don’t have an expectation of what’s to come and why it’s so important to you. Take fifteen minutes to educate and empower your guy. Tell him why you chose me and my style of photography. Show him your three favourite sessions that I’ve done, explain why you love them and express to him how much it means to you. Trust me, he’ll light up the camera for you!

11

Long pants and closed-toed shoes are the most sophisticated and masculine looks for men. They draw attention away from his legs and feet and place it where you want it: on the face you fell in love with.

12

Above all else, I want you to feel comfortable in your images. Use the tips I've provided as guidance but, ultimately, choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in because when you feel comfortable, your confidence will shine through in your images!

Want to include your kids or pets in your session?

Here's How!

A lot of my couples want to include their pets or littles in their engagement session and I'm always happy to meet these special members of your family.

While the focus of your engagement session is you and your partner and helping you get used to posing in preparation for your wedding day, I'm happy to have your kids or pets join us for the first fifteen minutes of your session. I recommend having a family member or friend bring them to the session for you OR for them to stay throughout the session to watch your kids or pets after we're done getting pictures with them that way you're free to focus on each other while you finish your session.
